Troy Engle's sideman resume reads like a who's who of Bluegrass and Country Music. He's played everywhere from the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN to Bluegrass and Country Festivals all across North America, with artists like: Patty Loveless, Larry Sparks, The Isaacs, and Buddy Jewell. He's written award winning bluegrass hits with Dixie and Tom T. Hall., and composed music for TV Shows like The Voice, American Pickers, Duck Dynasty, and Pawn Stars.
In 2018 he stepped out from the shadows of the spotlight, to shine the light on his own original music, releasing his first all original, solo album “Southern Skies”. In 2020 he recorded “Fox Hollow Memories”, a tribute to Dixie and Tom T Hall, featuring songs co-written with the Halls. When we say “solo projects”, we do mean solo! Troy sang and wrote all of the songs on the albums, played all of the instruments on them, sang all of the parts (save for a for a few guest vocalists), and if that wasn't enough, Troy recorded, mixed, and mastered the albums as well!
In 2024 he released his latest album “Back Home” on Pinecastle Records, which included his #1 Bluegrass gospel song “Never Too Lost”. As with past projects, it’s a 100% “Troy” production, with him playing guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, dobro, bass, pedal dobro, and more. It will features new songs written by Troy along with songs co-written with some of the best songwriters in Bluegrass.
Since 2018 he has been bringing these tunes to life on stage with his ace band “Southern Skies”. The band has become a family affair, with Troy on guitar/lead vocals, his wife Mandy on upright bass, daughter Lizzie doing lead/harmony vocals/fiddle, and son Troy Martin on snare drum/vocals. They are joined by Adam Kruzic on harmony vocals/mandolin, and Mike Brubaker on banjo. The band specializes in original, traditional Bluegrass, with a modern flair. If you took Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks, and threw in a little Randy Travis for good measure, "Troy Engle and Southern Skies" is what that band might sound like. They bring honest, heartfelt music to fans of all ages.
"The title cut is the album’s first single, and it makes clear that this talented picker has what it takes." John Lawless-Bluegrass Today
